We’ve made some changes to our Original Short-Play Expo, to be held October 17th.  Based on feedback from writers and crew, we have decided to make it more of a festival and workshop format.

The play submission deadline has been extended to Sept 15, in light of the changes
in format (we no longer require time to rehearse and stage each script).

Interested writers should still submit work for consideration (20 minutes / 4 actors maximum) to productions@avthespians.org. From these, AVT will select several for a series of one-hour sessions, which will consist of a reading and limited staging by actors, who will have had advance reading of the scripts to develop basic characters.  Following the reading, a panel of tech crew, along with AVT’s Artistic Director, Technical Director, and Production Stage Manager, will lead a discussion on the work.

Aspiring playwrights will receive feedback from actors, techies, production staff, fellow writers, and audience members through this expo.

Audience and guests are welcome to stop by at any time during the expo. Admission will be free. RSVP and address information will be released closer to the event, after we have selected and scheduled the works to be exhibited.

Join us for an afternoon of experimental community theatre!

Edit: The format of this event was changed on 7/24/09.
Edit: The dates for the deadline and event were changed on 9/13/09.

With Crime and Punishment about 6 months off (by necessity for a number of reasons unfortunately), we thought we should put something together for the relative near term.  So…. AVT will be hosting an original short-play expo on Saturday, October 24th!

ATTENTION LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS!!! We are looking for original short plays, approximately 15-20 min in length.  This is a great opportunity to sharpen your  skills and get some feedback on your writing style from a small, friendly audience.  Also, it’s a great fun outlet for your creative energies in our garage theatre!

We will have the garage theatre set up and open for the full afternoon on Oct 24th, exact times TBA.  From the submitted scripts, we will select several to be exhibited at the expo.  Each script will be allotted approximately one hour of time for reading/performance and discussion.  A group of actors will be on hand to read for characters and perform basic stagework.  The Aristic Director, Technical Director, and Production Stage Manager of AVT will be on hand to observe and review your work, and give you feedback from each of their perspectives.

Audience members and those interested in our project are welcome to stop by at any time during the open house.  We will publish in advance the schedule of plays to be discussed and times.  Admission will be FREE.

For playwrights, this is a great chance to get feedback from directors, techies, stage crew, actors, and a test audience.   For theatre folk, this is a wonderful opportunity to give some solid feedback to aspiring writers, and to work with the Antelope Valley’s latest local creative writing.  For everyone else, come on down and enjoy a fun, casual, and participative experiment in local community theatre!

  • Scripts should require no more than 3-4 actors onstage at one time, and have minimal scenic and technical requirements.  Maximum performance time is 20 min.
